Traditional:    Conflict must be avoided; indicates group malfunction.


Human Resources: Conflict is a natural, inevitable outcome in a group & can be a positive force.


Interactionist: Not only can conflict be positive, it is absolutely necessary for a group to perform effectively.


( avoid it....accept it....encourage it)


An optimum level of conflict can be beneficial to an organization’s

operation as a source of change & prevents complacency &

stimulaters new ideas....i.e. a harmonious, peaceful, tranquil & cooperative group is likely to become static, apathetic, & nonrersponsive

to needs for change & innovation.
